CARROTS, CARROTS AND MORE CARROTS

Did you know that the nine animals in the Petting Farm at Fort Zion and The Virgin Trading Post are responsible for eating close to a whopping 5,000 lbs carrots every season?

For a dollar, visitors can buy three carrots to feed to any of our nine animals - whether it's Sundance the miniature donkey, or Sampson, Buffy and their friends the Alpacas.

On average, every month they consume around twelve 50 lbs boxes, which equates to around 4,800 lbs during our eight month opening season.

Naturally we also feed them a balanced diet suitable for their species so they don't only consume carrots.

From the photos you post we can see just how much they love getting their carrots from you, our visitors.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH: APRIL 2017

At Fort Zion and the Virgin Trading Post we are blessed to have our visitors share their wonderful images of their time with us on various social media channels.

This month, for the first time, we have chosen a Photo of the Month, and we hope it raises a smile with you in the same way it did with us.

This image was taken just after our opening early last month and posted to Instagram by "timmyblueeyes". We especially like the attempted photobombing by Sampson, one of our Alpacas. We hope you enjoyed your visit as much as we enjoyed your photo.

Hashtag your images #FortZion and you too could be a winner of our next Photo of the Month.

ZION FROM SPACE: IMAGES BY NASA

If you go up one step from the Grand Canyon on the geological “Grand Staircase” of the western United States you will reach Zion National Park.

Zion is the middle step on this tilted, eroded, staircase-like feature of the Colorado Plateau. It connects the very old, exposed sedimentary rocks of the Grand Canyon with the relatively newer rocks of Bryce Canyon.

The images here, acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8, show Zion National Park, which spans 593 square kilometers (229 square miles) of semi-arid desert in southwestern Utah.
The four images show the four seasons, starting with fall 2015 (top left) and progressing clockwise.

Most rainfall and snowmelt runs off of the hard, dry surfaces; only a small percent percolates through the sandstone to collect as groundwater. Runoff long ago helped jumpstart erosion in the area, but it wasn’t until about 4.5 million years ago that the Virgin River began sculpting Zion Canyon—one of the park’s most visited features.

The Virgin River is typically calm, not too deep, and hikers in the canyon can easily wade through it. But when the river floods, it has an increased capacity to move huge amounts of sediment downstream. The sediment acts like sandpaper, scouring and deepening the canyon.

In one particularly narrow part of the canyon, aptly named “The Narrows,” the river has cut down through 305 meters (1,000 feet) of rock. In some sections, hikers maneuver though canyon walls only 5 meters (16 feet) wide. Hikers need to be extra cautious, particularly during the monsoon season, as the canyons can quickly flood.

But Zion is not the only canyon in the park worth checking out. The Kolob Canyons area in the park’s northwestern corner takes visitors deep into the desert wilderness. Here you will find Kolob Arch, the world’s longest natural arch, which spans 94.5 meters (310 feet).

SUNDANCE: VIRGIN'S FAMOUS DONKEY

We're very honored to have Sundance, our 22-year-old miniature donkey, as one of the most popular animals in our Petting Farm here at the Fort Zion Restaurant and Virgin Trading Post.

Born in Virgin in 1995, 'Sunny' (pictured right) is also what's known as a 'burrito', is mostly grey with a black cross on his back and black and cream on both his muzzle and belly.

Sunny has established a worldwide following of fans thanks to his passion for meeting and greeting visitors to the Petting Farm, stealing their ice creams and drinking their orange soda. You've been warned.

He loves to sing for carrots and absolutely adores the attention he gets from our visitors. He particularly likes posing for pictures. He's handsome, and he knows it.

Being born under the star sign Aries he's also got a heart and actually cried for more than a month when his best friend, butch cassidy, died several years ago.

To some up Sundance is a few short words isn't easy however the Fort Zion Restaurant and Virgin Trading Post owner Andy Anderson said it best. "Sunny is the oldest, fattest ass in Virgin."
